How to Visit Canada's Stratford Festival

The Stratford Festival has been delighting theater fans since 1957. The 7-month festival is held in Stratford, Ontario each year from April through November. The emphasis is on works by William Shakespeare, but performances also include works by a variety of playwrights and musical book authors.

      Plan a trip to Stratford, Ontario. Stratford is located in southwestern Ontario, Canada, about 75 miles west of Toronto and about 100 miles east of Detroit. The town of 30,000 residents, along the Avon River, boasts a large number of Victorian bed and breakfasts and historic inns.

      Purchase Festival tickets. Tickets to Stratford Festival performances are available online, by mail and at the Festival's ticket office. Discounts are given to students, seniors and those under 30 years old.

      Sit in on pre- and post-show lectures and discussions given on some of the plays shown at the Festival throughout the season. These are generally free of admission, but space must be reserved in advance. View the Events Calendar online for more information.

      Attend a performance. The Festival uses four theaters, the 1826-seat Festival Theater, the 1072-seat Avon Theater, the 480-seat Tom Patterson Theater and the intimate, 260-seat Studio Theater.

      Take a Back Stage Tour. For a look at the theater facilities and the behind-the-scenes workings of the productions, take a Back Stage Tour. The tour includes stops at the wardrobe room, the wig shop, the theater laundry, the rehearsal halls and the props workshop. Tickets for the tour are available at the theater or in advance via the Festival website. Discounts are given to seniors and students.

      Ride the Stratford Express. Climb aboard and take a train ride from Toronto to Stratford. Here you can enjoy seeing the classic musical, "Oklahoma," a gala reception and gourmet dinner, and a silent auction to boot--all for a fee of course.
