Vancouver has every type of music and atmosphere. For dancing, try the Tonic Club at 919 Granville St. With three floors of dancing to Latin, hip hop and dance music plus a 17-foot-long bar, you're sure to find music and atmosphere you like. Granville Street is home to numerous lounges and clubs. Gay clubs are mostly downtown on Davie Street, while girls party on Commercial Drive.
Gastown is a favorite with tourists and locals for casual pubs and restaurants. For a casual Irish pub, go to the Irish Heather Gastropub at 210 Carrall St. Owned and operated by Irish folks, it's authentic and laid back.
Most of the live music venues in Vancouver concentrate on Granville Street downtown. For over 75 years, the Commodore Ballroom has housed some big name acts in an Art Deco hall. Up the street is the Roxy, known for casual bands and strong drinks. The Yale is a renovated 19th-century hotel that hosts soul and R&B bands. Nearby Gastown has other venues and pubs with live music and casual atmospheres.
There are a few distinct neighborhoods in Vancouver that offer plenty of evening activities. If you want to dress up and hit the town, head downtown to Granville Street or more upscale Yaletown has some of the best patios for entertaining on balmier nights. Bar None at 1222 Hamilton St. in Yaletown is popular with local celebrities.
Main Street is more laid back, featuring many locally owned restaurants. Latitude Restaurant and Wine bar at 3250 Main St. is more mainstream, but a good choice for a night out with friends.
For families or those not looking to party, Vancouver's temperate climate means you can enjoy the outdoors much of the year. In the winter, Cypress and Grouse ski hills near Vancouver offer night skiing and snowshoeing for those who enjoy outdoor adventure. Both are easily accessible by car. There are also public transit options, but these take more time.
In the summer, the city of Vancouver sometimes shows movies in the park for free. Summertime also has many nighttime festivals, including the weekly Chinese Night Market. Year round, the seawall in Stanley Park is safe to walk at night as you enjoy the city lights' reflection off the water.
