Immigration and Entry to Canada

Immigration and entry into Canada is controlled by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada department of the Canadian Government. Immigration and Citizenship Canada was established in 1994.

    • Canada’s immigration services are linked to its citizenship registration agencies by the Immigration & Citizenship Canada department. The agency provides potential immigrants with information on Canadian immigration.

    Types

    • People have several options when immigrating to Canada, according to Citizenship & Immigration Canada. These options include immigration as a skilled worker, being a provincial nominee or an entrepreneur.

    Entry

    • To cross the Canadian border and enter the country immigrants need certain documents. Each person entering Canada must have a valid passport or travel documents and must have a visa and proof of permanent residence.

    Goods

    • When entering Canada as an immigrant, a list of goods brought with the visa holder must be supplied to Canadian immigration officials. A second list of items that will be shipped into the country after the immigrant has entered Canada must also be supplied.

    Money

    • Upon entering Canada, an immigrant must inform a Canadian official if they are carrying more than $10,000 in Canadian currency. Failing to declare more than $10,000 could result in a fine or jail time.
