Mexican Immigration to Canada

Many Mexicans are choosing Canada as a place to call home due to the relaxed immigration standards. They are also seeking refugee status as other countries close their borders.
  1. Immigrant Rates Have Climbed

    • A Canadian national survey showed that 16,520 Mexicans immigrated to Canada between 2001 and 2006. This was more than double what the previous survey showed in 2001.

The Mexican immigrant population was almost 50,000 in 2006.

Many Ways to Immigrate to Canada

    • Mexicans can immigrate to Canada as skilled workers (or Quebec skilled worker), Canadian Experience Class (for those with work or education experience in Canada), investor, self-employed, sponsored family member, or as a provincial nominee.

    Immigrating to Canada Takes Time

    • Immigrating to Canada from Mexico can take anywhere from 12 to 30 months depending on the type of immigration application. Fees also vary greatly.

Many Mexican Immigrants Have Refugee Status

    • In 2009, Mexican nationals made up 22 percent of the claims put before the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.

Many refugees come to Canada because they fear persecution at home.

    Canada Encourage Immigration

    • Canada is looking for students and skilled workers from Mexico. This is largely due to Canada's low rate of population growth.
