Vacations in Ontario, Canada

Ontario is Canada's most populous province and the second largest in land area. Its border with the United States alone is more than 1,500 miles across the northern side of five American states. With an area this large, there is little doubt that there is plenty one can find to do on a trip here. Whether your idea of a vacation is a theme park, a pleasure cruise or outdoor adventure, Ontario has something that fits the bill.
  1. Storyland

    • Families traveling to Ontario will find a low-key kids theme park that seems to be holding its own despite offering a simple range of attractions. Since 1966 Storyland has based its theme park in Horton, Ontario on the classic children's stories we all heard growing up. Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill, the Lion and the Mouse, Goldilocks and many more are told and acted out to visitors on a daily basis.

But there is more than just storybook surroundings. This park has rides, restaurants and shows to entertain the entire family. Kids can square off against total strangers or go brother against sister in a massive water balloon showdown, slide down steep thrill slides, catch fish on a boat ride attraction or play mini golf.

The main attraction of Storyland is the Champlain Lookout, the highest point along the Ottawa River where visitors can see for many miles in every direction. A telescope allows visitors to sneak a peek at the nearby towns and observe what they are up to while totally unaware that they are being watched.

    Cruise The St. Lawrence

    • Cruising the St. Lawrence River can be a vacation all its own. Kingston based St. Lawrence Cruise Lines takes passengers aboard a replica steamboat down the river from Kinston to various locations across Ontario and Quebec.

This family-owned cruise line has been around for more than 30 years, but its accommodations are both modern and high quality. The friendly crew and the feeling that every meal was home cooked by someone you know combines with the cruise ship's experienced river navigators and excellent maid service to make this cruise one to remember.

The ships leave Kingston en route to various spots amid stunning natural beauty found all along the waterways of Ontario. Ports of call include Quebec City, Ottawa and Montreal. Various lengths of cruises are available.

    Snowmobiling

    • The Ottawa Valley is famous for its snowfall and seemingly endless miles of maintained snowmobile trails that can keep riders busy for an entire stay in the area. Many of the snowmobile clubs in the area chip in to maintain routes between stopping points, and many come here to hop from one place to another.

Among the popular activities for visitors to the Ottawa Valley is to bring (or rent) snowmobiles and travel through the more than 1,500 miles of trails throughout the region and stop overnight at inns along the pathway. It is not uncommon for a traveling group of snowmobile enthusiasts to stay in a different inn every night of their trip and spend the majority of the days straddling the machines.
