The Huronia Players theater company performs three plays a year at the 120-seat Huronia Players Theatre in the Midland Cultural Centre. Unlike other companies in towns of similar size, the Huronia Players shies away from performing movie classics -- like "Driving Miss Daisy" -- opting for comedic plays instead. Show tickets are purchased online, by phone or in person at the center. On summer nights, head to the Midland Drive-In for outdoor showings of new Hollywood flicks -- preferably on Thursdays, when admission is charged by the carload.
Explore a shaman's lodge, longhouse and wigwam as part of the Huronia Museum's reconstructed 16th-century village. The Huron Ouendat Village portrays life in the area before European contact. The exhibit also features a fur drying rack, fish rack and bone pit. Inside the museum, a gallery showcases contemporary and archaeological works. Approximately 2.5 miles east, another re-created historical village, Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons, explores the mid-17th-century life of Ontario's early French pioneers. Both villages operate with reduced hours during off-peak seasons.
The main pulse of Midland's central business district, King Street, is lined with coffee shops, bistros, shops -- and murals. In 1990, the city's business improvement association commissioned more than 30 works depicting important periods in Georgian Bay history. Throughout downtown businesses' painted exteriors depict prominent people from early pioneers to businessmen. Among the murals is one of the largest outdoor historic murals on the continent, found at the north end of the street at the harbor. The piece shows a Jesuit priest and a member of the Huron tribe overlooking the historic village Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons.
At the foot of King Street, Midland Harbour on Georgian Bay offers more than just a slip to park your boat. The Midland Rotary Waterfront Trail extends from the harbor to the length of the town's waterfront, with historical signs relevant to Midland's industrial history. Sightseeing tours of the bay aboard the Miss Midland, chartered through Midland Cruises, occur June through October. Early July through late August, the harbor hosts art exhibits and musical performances each Wednesday on the bay docks.
