How to Obtain a Marriage Certificate in Honduras

Step-by-Step Process

1. Gather Required Documents

• Completed marriage application form (from RNP)
• Two passport-style photos per partner
• Original birth certificates (apostilled if foreign)
• Previous marriage dissolution proof:
  • Death certificate of former spouse (if widowed)
  • Divorce decree (if divorced), finalized and apostilled
• National Identity Card (DNI) for Hondurans; valid passport for foreigners
• Two adult witnesses with their DNI/passport

2. Appear at the Civil Registry (RNP)

Go to the Registro Nacional de las Personas (RNP) in the municipality where the marriage will be registered. Both parties and witnesses must appear in person.

3. Pay the Fee

Fees vary by municipality (typically L300–L800 / ~$12–$32). Pay at the RNP or designated bank.

4. Ceremony and Temporary Certificate

Civil ceremony performed by the registrar. You receive a temporary marriage certificate (acta provisional) immediately.

5. Permanent Certificate

The permanent certificate (acta definitiva) is mailed to the address on the application within ~2 weeks. It is the legal proof of marriage for all purposes (immigration, name change, benefits).
