The Andaman and Nicobar Islands comprise a chain of 572 islands in the Bay of Bengal, forming an Indian union territory. Only about 38 are permanently inhabited.
The archipelago stretches over 800 km, with the Andaman group to the north and Nicobar group to the south, separated by the Ten Degree Channel.
