According to Los Angeles.com, the Southern Californian city's nightlife scene has a wide variety of options to suit nearly every taste and mood, though many hot spots have a short life span in the city. However, L.A.'s lesbian bar and nightclub scene has a few long-established party institutions.

    • Since 1990, lesbians in Los Angeles have found a place to party on Friday nights at Girl Bar events held at various clubs around town. Founded by Robin Gans and Sandy Sachs, Girl Bar boasts an upscale atmosphere that has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly and the New York Times. As of September 2010, this long-running is held at Haute nightclub and the party begins at 9 p.m. and winds down around 2 a.m. Girl Bar features go-go dancers, DJs, dancing and networking opportunities for patrons.

    The Palms Bar

    • This bar boasts a laid-back atmosphere and weekly drink specials, and according to its website, the bar has played host to notable clientele like Ellen DeGeneres and Melissa Etheridge. Weekly events at The Palms Bar include Sunday karaoke and Tuesday night comedy, and the club features drink specials every day. As of September 2010, The Palms Bar is open Monday through Saturday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Sundays.

    Jewel's Catch One

    • Established in 1972, Jewel's Catch One touts itself as Los Angles' first black gay and lesbian disco. Today the venue is a dance club by night and a community health center by day, serving residents of all sexual orientations. Jewel's Catch One has three dance floors, three bars and weekly parties that draw a diverse crowd. Some events at Jewel's Catch One include karaoke, live musical performances and themed parties. Hungry patrons can also grab a bite to eat at the club's Vegan Village Internet Cafe.
