What is ecozone?

Ecozone refers to a large region on Earth that is characterized by its distinct ecological characteristics, including climate, flora, fauna, and ecosystems. It is larger than a biome and often corresponds to a continent or major geographical region. The concept of ecozones is used in various fields, including ecology, biogeography, and conservation biology.

Earth can be divided into several major ecozones, with various classification systems proposed by different organizations or researchers. One prominent ecozone classification is the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) ecoregions system, which recognizes 14 ecozones based on global patterns of biodiversity, geology, and climate:

Palearctic: Covers much of Europe, North Africa, temperate Asia, and northern Japan.

Nearctic: Includes northern North America, Greenland, and northern Mexico.

Neotropical: Covers Central and South America.

Afrotropical: Includes most of sub-Saharan Africa.

Indo-Malaya: Encompasses the Indian subcontinent, much of Southeast Asia, and part of China.

Australasia: Consists of Australia, New Guinea, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands.

Antarctic: Includes Antarctica and the surrounding waters.

Tropical and Subtropical Dry Broadleaf Forests: Covers dry forest regions in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Deserts and Xeric Shrublands: Includes desert and xeric shrubland regions globally.

Mangroves: Encompasses mangrove ecosystems around the world.

Ecozones have ecological significance as they provide a framework for understanding global biodiversity patterns and conservation priorities.
