Is Puerto Rico a protectorate of the US?

Puerto Rico is a United States territory. It is not a protectorate but rather a commonwealth. This means that Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, but Puerto Rico is not a state. The United States has full authority over Puerto Rico, but Puerto Ricans do not have the same rights as U.S. citizens living in the 50 states. For example, Puerto Ricans cannot vote in presidential elections, and they do not have a voting representative in Congress.
