Who were the first inhabitants of Caribbean Islands?

The first inhabitants of the Caribbean islands were the indigenous peoples who are referred to as the Taíno people, Igneris, and Kallinago (or Island Caribs). These groups migrated to the islands from South America via canoe around 5000 BC. The Taíno were originally from the Orinoco River basin in South America and established settlements on the islands of Puerto Rico, Hispaniola (the Dominican Republic and Haiti), and Jamaica. The Igneris were a group of Arawakan-speaking peoples who migrated from the Greater Antilles to the Lesser Antilles. The Kallinago were a Caribbean-speaking people who arrived in the Caribbean in the 14th century, mostly settling the Windward Islands.
