1. Financial Difficulties: The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant challenges to the tourism industry in Bermuda, including the Sonesta property. With restrictions on travel and reduced tourism, the hotel incurred substantial financial losses and could no longer sustain its operations.
2. Temporary Closure: As a result of the economic impact, the Sonesta Beach Resort Bermuda announced its temporary closure in May 2020. The closure allowed the company to evaluate its options and determine a feasible future for the property.
3. New Brand Repositioning: During the closure, the property went through a comprehensive rebranding and property renovation process. Sonesta International Hotels Corporation decided to sell the iconic resort property in Southampton due to financial constraints in January 2022.
4. Acquisition and Repurposing: The Bermuda Tourism Authority confirmed the purchase of the Sonesta property in March 2022. An independent third party purchased the resort hotel property, which includes more than 166 guest rooms within several distinct buildings, meeting space, restaurants, water sports, recreational and wellness facilities, a tennis court, and extensive beachfront access.
5. Resumption of Operations: Following significant refurbishments and property enhancements, the former Sonesta property relaunched under a different brand. It reopened during the Spring of 2023 as the Bermudiana Beach Resort, marking a rebirth and restoration of an esteemed establishment cherished by many guests visiting Bermuda's beautiful shores.
