What type of fish live in the Abyss zone ofthe ocean?

Abyssal Zone Fish

This realm of total darkness is dominated by carnivores, as little organic matter filters down from the surface—most of the sustenance in the abyss is derived from within. The deep sea fish that swim and hunt in the abyssal zone have many adaptations for survival, including:

- Large mouths and teeth for catching and eating other animals

- Bioluminescence to attract prey and mates, or to see other animals

- Long, whip-like tails to help them move quickly through the water

- Highly sensitive eyes and other senses to detect movement and light in the dark

- Long and fragile bodies that can withstand extreme pressures

Examples of abyssal fish species:

- Grenadiers

- Gulpers

- Hatchetfish

- Viperfish

- Sea spiders

- Dragonfish
