The island is about 147.5 km² (57 sq mi) in area and has a population of about 750,000 people. Lantau Island is a popular tourist destination, and is home to many temples and monasteries, as well as the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

Lantau Island is connected to Hong Kong Island and Kowloon by the Lantau Link, which consists of the Tsing Ma Bridge, the Kap Shui Mun Bridge, and the Lantau Airport Expressway. The island is also served by the Hong Kong International Airport, which is located on the northern tip of the island.
