What is Lantau Island?

Lantau Island (大嶼山, lit. "Big Island Mountain"; Cantonese Yale: Daaiyuhsaan) is an island in Hong Kong, located at the mouth of the Pearl River estuary in southern China. It is the largest island of Hong Kong, and the sixth largest in China. Lantau Island is part of the Islands District of Hong Kong, and is governed by the Islands District Council.

The island is about 147.5 km² (57 sq mi) in area and has a population of about 750,000 people. Lantau Island is a popular tourist destination, and is home to many temples and monasteries, as well as the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

Lantau Island is divided into two parts: North Lantau and South Lantau. North Lantau is mainly rural, and is home to the Po Lin Monastery, the Tian Tan Buddha, and the Ngong Ping 360 cable car. South Lantau is more developed, and is home to the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, the Citygate Outlets, and the Tung Chung New Town.

Lantau Island is connected to Hong Kong Island and Kowloon by the Lantau Link, which consists of the Tsing Ma Bridge, the Kap Shui Mun Bridge, and the Lantau Airport Expressway. The island is also served by the Hong Kong International Airport, which is located on the northern tip of the island.
