How to Travel to Holguin, Cuba

Holguin is a Cuban Province bordering the North Atlantic Ocean in the South Eastern horn. It is La Tunas on the West, Granma and Santiago de Cuba on the South and Guantanamo to the East. It is about 65 Kilometers from the Frank Pais International Airport in the Municipio (provincial division) of Frank Pais. This airport connects Holguin province to other Cuban provinces and the rest of the world. Domestic commercial flights are available from the Cuban Capital, Havana, to Holguin. Although the U.S. does not have full diplomatic ties with Cuba, the latter welcomes its visitors.

      Carry out research. Consult the Department of State for consular information on the logistics and requirements of traveling to Cuba. This department has an American Citizens' Services and Crisis Management program that notifies visitors to Cuba and other places of travel alerts. You will receive information on the travel routes and airline companies operating flights to Cuba.

      Get a visa. Apply for a travel visa from the Department of State. There are general licenses for travelers to Cuba depending on the purpose of the visit and the title of the traveler (journalists or government officials, for example). Special travel licenses are available for categories of visitors including students seeking higher education, religious organizations personnel and humanitarian workers. These licenses are issued by the Licensing Division of the Office of Assets Control in the Department of Treasury. Specify whether you intend to travel by boat or air during license application.

      Make reservations if you intend to stay in a hotel or resort in Holguin (see Resources). After a reservation is made, print out the voucher or ticket and keep it safely. You are required to present these before being admitted to the accommodation facility.

      Travel to Havana. Havana is is the capital city of Cuba. Airlines flying to Cuba include Cuba Airlines, Aero Mexico, Taca and Air Jamaica.

      Register in Cuba. Register with the US Interests Section (USINT) in Havana. This office acts as an embassy to give travel information to Americans visiting Cuba. As yet, full diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba have not been established.

      Travel to Holguin. The distance from Havana to Holguin is approximately 734 kilometers. Cubana, the country's official airline has direct flights to the Frank Pais International Airport. From here, take a taxi cab to Holguin. It takes less than an hour to get there by road. Check if the resort where you will be staying offers taxi cab services for their customers. Domestic commercial flights are also available from Havana to Holguin.
