How to Travel to Cuba From the U.K.

Cuba is a popular tourist destination. Its sandy beaches, unique culture and history, and perpetually warm weather make it an ideal island destination. However, it is not reached as easily as some of the other popular island getaways in the Caribbean. It is currently illegal to travel directly from the U.S. to Cuba. This makes the U.K. a major departure point for trips to Cuba. U.S. passport holders should keep in mind that it is still technically illegal for them to enter Cuba, even if they are traveling through England first.

Instructions

    • 1

Check fares on popular carriers that connect the U.K. with Cuba. These include Cuba's national carrier, Cubana de Aviacion, and Virgin Atlantic, which often offers reasonably priced fares.

    • 2

Look into indirect flights. Cheap flights are often available from Spanish cities like Barcelona and Madrid. English travelers may find a connecting flight in one of these cities to be more reasonably priced than a direct flight from one of London's airports.

    • 3

Buy a round-trip ticket. All visitors from the U.K. must show a valid return ticket before they are allowed to enter Cuba.

    • 4

Acquire a valid passport and Cuban visa. Travelers must have a passport that is more than six months away from its expiration date. A tourist visa can be procured at any Cuban embassy or consulate.

    • 5

Recheck current visa and passport requirements. It is the responsibility of each traveler to make sure that their documents are in order before departure.

    • 6

Keep up to date on the weather. Cuba is occasionally hit by tropical storms and hurricanes during the summer months. Though these storms are somewhat rare, they can be quite dangerous and cause significant damage to the country's infrastructure.
