What did the US do after rejection of treaty to build a canal in panama?
The United States took control of the Panama Canal Zone after the rejection of the Hay-Herran Treaty in 1903. The treaty would have allowed the US to build a canal across Panama, but it was rejected by the Colombian Senate. In response, the US supported a Panamanian independence movement, and when Panama declared independence from Colombia in 1903, the US quickly recognized the new country. The US then signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty with Panama, which gave the US control of the Panama Canal Zone in perpetuity.
