There are several beaches around Nassau. These include Cabbage Beach, which is considered one of the prettiest, and is popular for swimming and water sports. The Western Esplanade area, known to the locals as Long Wharf, is a destination for spring breakers and locals hold social occasions there too.
Visitors can rent boats or join a charter excursion for a tour of the islands. Some trips are arranged by hotels, and there are boats offering catering and crew. Powered boats, sailing boats and jet skis all use the waters.
Nassau is a popular base for divers and snorkelers because of the clear waters, abundance of shipwrecks and colorful reefs. Sharks and dolphins live in this part of the world. Guides lead divers on underwater tours and plenty of outlets hire out equipment. Other water sports include jet skiing, parasailing and canoeing on Lake Nancy. There is a kite-boarding school in Nassau to teach beginners about the sport.
Both bonefishing and deep-sea fishing are popular in these waters. Charter companies take passengers out on fishing excursions. Read the local fishing regulations to ensure you comply with the laws.
The Retreat Garden National Park, consisting of 11 acres, is the headquarters for the Bahamas National Trust. The garden displays many rare palms, hardwoods and native trees. More than 176 species of palms make this one of the world's largest palm collections in private hands. The different kinds of trees and vegetation encourage a diversity of birds, both indigenous and migratory. Visitors can use a map for a self-guided tour or join a free guided tour. The garden hosts two annual events to raise funds, the Art & Wine Festival in late October and the Christmas Jollification in November.
