What is happening to the width of Atlantic ocean?

The width of the Atlantic Ocean is increasing. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a spreading center, where new oceanic crust is formed as the African and South American plates move away from each other. This process, known as seafloor spreading, causes the ocean floor to widen by about 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) per year.
