Is the Mediterranean Sea Part of the Atlantic Ocean?

The Mediterranean Sea is not a direct part of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a semi-enclosed marginal sea connected to the Atlantic only through the narrow Strait of Gibraltar. Geologically and oceanographically, it is distinct: it has higher salinity, a unique climate (Mediterranean climate), and distinct biodiversity. While it exchanges water with the Atlantic, it functions as a separate basin with its own circulation patterns.
