The Colorado River Ends in the Gulf of California (Pacific), Not the Atlantic

The Colorado River flows 1,450 mi from the Colorado Rockies to the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez)—an arm of the Pacific Ocean. It does not reach the Atlantic.

Course

  • Source: Rocky Mountain NP, CO (La Poudre Pass, 10,184 ft).
  • Through: CO, UT, AZ, NV, CA, MX (Baja California, Sonora).
  • Major dams: Glen Canyon (Lake Powell), Hoover (Lake Mead), Parker, Davis, Imperial, Morelos.
  • Delta: Historically vast estuary; now mostly dry due to diversions (90%+ allocated).

Why the Confusion?

Some think it reaches the Gulf of Mexico (Atlantic) because it drains the Continental Divide's eastern slope? No—the Divide sends Colorado River west. The Rio Grande (parallel south) reaches Gulf of Mexico. The Colorado's endpoint is unambiguously Pacific.

Water allocation (1922 Compact) divides 15M acre-ft/yr among 7 US states + Mexico. Climate change + overallocation = river rarely reaches sea. Restoration efforts target delta pulse flows.
