Is Petroleum Formed in Shallow Ocean Basins?

Petroleum formation is a geological process that occurs over millions of years under specific conditions. Contrary to the idea that it forms in shallow ocean basins, petroleum typically originates from organic-rich sediments buried deep underground. Over time, heat and pressure transform this organic material into hydrocarbons within sedimentary basins, often at great depths. Shallow basins generally lack the necessary temperature and pressure for this transformation. Therefore, commercial oil and gas deposits are usually found in deep sedimentary formations rather than shallow marine environments.
