Spanish explorer Francisco Colorado is credited with discovering the river that now bears his name. During his explorations in the 16th century, he encountered the major waterway flowing through the southwestern North American desert. The river was subsequently named Río Colorado ("Red River") for its reddish sediment—and by extension, the explorer's surname became attached to the river, the U.S. state, and the broader region.
