How did Washington D.C. Become our nations capital?

In July 1790, President George Washington signed the Residence Act establishing a site near Georgetown along the Potomac river between Virginia and Maryland as the location of the permanent capital of the United States. Construction took place with an initial design plan provided by Pierre Charles L'Enfant in cooperation with George Washinton himself and the federal government during July of 1791.
