What was main goal in settling the borderlands?

Spain wanted to expand its control in the Americas. They founded St. Augustine, Florida in 1565 as the first permanent European settlement in what would become the United States. From this base, they explored and claimed much of the southeastern United States, including what is now Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama.

The borderlands were a buffer zone between the Spanish and French colonies. The Spanish wanted to prevent the French from encroaching on their territory, and they also wanted to use the borderlands as a base for attacks on French settlements.

The Spanish also hoped the borderlands would provide them with access to valuable resources such as gold, silver, and furs.
