How to Anchor in Key Largo, Florida

Key Largo in Florida is one of the most popular diving and fishing spots in the United States. The largest coral reef in American waters is about three miles offshore. While there are numerous charter boats available in the area, some visitors choose to bring their own watercraft. If you bring your own boat, you must be aware of the local requirements for safe anchorage. Because many of the waters around Key Largo are protected under state and federal laws, you can be fined for damaging the sea floor with either your hull (running aground) or anchor.

Instructions

    • 1

Use your chart to find a sandy bottomed area near the location you want to anchor the boat, where the low tide level won't ground your boat.

    • 2

Use your fish finder or depth finder to verify that the bottom is truly sandy. Storms can change the bottom conditions overnight, so don't rely on only the chart.

    • 3

Drop your first anchor. Reverse your engine to force the anchor to drive itself into the sand.

    • 4

Motor 25 to 50 feet away from the first anchor while playing out line. You want to position the second anchor so that a line between the two anchors is perpendicular to the current.

    • 5

Drop the second anchor and secure it by reversing your motor. Two anchors are required in case one slips. If you come free of the bottom while at sea, you will have no way to know that you are adrift until you crash into something, as there is no nearby shoreline to judge yourself against. With two anchors, not only are the forces on each anchor reduced, the odds of both failing at the same time are almost negligible.

    • 6

Play out anchor line until both anchors are riding between two and three times the maximum depth of the water in your anchorage.

    • 7

To weigh anchor, reel in the line from one anchor at a time and pull each anchor straight from the bottom.
