What did Roosevelt do to allow the US blind a canal in panama?

Roosevelt negotiated the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty with Colombia, which would allow the United States to build a canal across the Isthmus of Panama. However, the Colombian government rejected the treaty. Roosevelt then supported a Panamanian revolution against Colombia. The revolution was successful and the new Panamanian government signed the Hay-Herrán Treaty, which gave the United States the rights to build the Panama Canal.
