What were the native names for New York cities five boroughs?

The five counties that make up New York City (or boroughs, as the locals call them) all had different Native American names.

Manhattan: The original native name for Manhattan is "Mannahatta," which means “island of many hills” in the Lenape language.

Brooklyn: The native name for Brooklyn was "Paumanok" which means "the island shaped like a fishhook" in the Lenape language.

Queens: Queens was called "Keshawachk" which means "place of the alders" in the Algonquian language.

The Bronx: The Bronx was originally known as "Rananchqua" or "Lenapehoking" which means "good land" or "land of the Lenapes" in the Algonquin language.

Staten Island: Staten Island was called "Aquehonga Manacknong," which means "good fishing place," or "island of shells," in the Lenape language.
