The Mosquito Coast: Columbus, the Miskito, and a Name That Stuck

There's no "Gulf of Mosquito." The name belongs to the Mosquito Coast (La Mosquitia)—a 400-km ribbon of Caribbean littoral from eastern Honduras to northern Nicaragua.

Columbus, on his fourth voyage (1502), encountered the Miskito people defending their territory fiercely. He dubbed them los mosquitos ("the mosquitoes")—a conflation of their name and their swarming resistance. The label migrated from people to place.

The Miskito, a mixed Afro-Indigenous group, later allied with Britain against Spain, forming a quasi-protectorate (1655–1894). The coast remains culturally distinct: Miskito, Creole, Garífuna, and Spanish voices, mangroves, lagoons, and a history no gulf could contain.
