Dimapur: The Gateway to Nagaland

Dimapur, Nagaland's largest city and commercial hub, is universally known as the "Gateway of Nagaland."

Why Dimapur?

  • Transport hub: Only airport (DMU) and major railhead in the state; NH-29 connects to Assam and Manipur.
  • Commercial center: Wholesale markets, banking, trade logistics for the entire state.
  • Historical significance: Ancient Kachari capital (ruins remain); WWII staging area.
  • Demographics: Most populous urban area (~123,000); diverse Naga tribes and non-tribal residents.

Visitor Note

All travelers to Nagaland (except state residents) require an Inner Line Permit (ILP), obtainable online or at Dimapur's Deputy Commissioner office. Dimapur is the primary entry point for permit processing and onward travel to Kohima, Mokokchung, Mon, and other districts.
