Major Street Gangs in East St. Louis, Illinois

Three prominent gangs operate in East St. Louis, each with roots outside the city:

  • Bloods: Originated in Los Angeles (1970s). Identifiers: red, "5-point star," specific hand signs. Sets operate nationally.
  • Black Disciples (BDs): Founded on Chicago's South Side (1960s). Part of the "Folks" alliance (6-point star). Multiple sets spread beyond Illinois.
  • Gangster Disciples (GDs): Chicago's Near West Side (1960s), also "Folks." One of the largest, most structured street gangs in the U.S.

These groups contest territory for drug sales and influence. Violence spikes during turf disputes. Law enforcement focuses on targeted enforcement, community intervention, and federal prosecutions (RICO).

Context: East St. Louis faces severe economic decline, population loss, and underinvestment—conditions that fuel gang activity. Solutions require sustained economic development, youth programs, and community policing alongside suppression.
