Over 80% of Brazilians live in two regions:

Southeast (~42% of population)

States: São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro
Major cities: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte

Northeast (~28% of population)

States: Bahia, Pernambuco, Ceará, Maranhão, others
Major cities: Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza

The Southeast is the economic powerhouse; the Northeast is culturally rich but historically poorer. The interior (Center-West, North/Amazon) is sparsely populated.
