Decide where you will build the fire pit. Be sure there are no hanging tree or bush branches nearby. An open area is the safest place because there is less risk in the open of a fire spreading. However, be sure to choose a place with attractive surroundings; a cool fire pit should be set in a cool-looking place.

Clear the area of branches, leaves and other flammable debris to prevent potential runaway fires. Clear a 6-foot circle.

Gather available rocks in various sizes to built a circle around the fire pit. Gather plenty of sticks and wood logs for the fire. Be sure you understand the regulations that apply to your camping area--some campgrounds will not allow you to gather firewood. In this case, you must bring your own. You can use a fire pan, which is available at most outdoor shops, but if you don't have one, dig a 3- or 4-inch-deep pit about a foot in diameter and line it with smaller stones. If possible, use old charcoal to lay your wood on and place it in the pit. Place wadded-up newspaper in the pit to help get the bigger logs burning. Use the remaining larger rocks to create a border for the fire pit--this should be about a 3-foot circle.

The keys to a cool fire pit are the seating and the natural rustic ambience of the outdoors. Bring comfortable chairs for plenty of seating. Camping chairs even come with a footrest option so you can really kick back. Don't forget your s’mores; they're great camping snacks to cook around your cool fire pit.
