How to Pack Food for Weekend Camping

Non-perishable food items are best for a camping trip. These foods are not required to be kept cold. If you do pack perishable items, bring the proper equipment to keep them cold, such as a cooler packed with ice. Keep food containers and utensils clean. Bring dish soap and gallon jugs of water if necessary. Here are some other tips on how to pack food for a weekend camping trip.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-wrap raw meat so their juices don't contaminate other foods. Juice from raw meat might contain harmful bacteria.

    • 2

Change the ice in your cooler when it melts. Once the ice turns into water, it won't keep your food from spoiling. A good habit is to change the ice before bed and again in the morning. If it melts throughout the day, it should be changed again.

    • 3

Clean containers and utensils thoroughly with dish soap. Do not wash your items in rivers, lakes or streams. Keep everything clean at all times.

    • 4

Bring food-storage bags. For example, if you open a package of cookies that cannot be properly closed, place them in a storage bag to prevent bugs and animals from getting into them.

    • 5

Bring plenty of drinking water. Do not drink from streams and lakes. Pathogens might live in these bodies of water, and there is no way of knowing what else is floating through the area. Bottled water is non-perishable and can be packed in a cooler or in any other type of container.
