How to Build a Portable Camping Shower

Camping is a wonderful activity for the whole family and can be a cost-effective alternative to other types of travel. Camping in remote sections of the woods offers the opportunity to explore new areas and get away from the crowds for some peace and quiet. Unfortunately, it also often means foregoing some basic amenities. While many people can live without a shower for a few days, others can’t. For those of us who prefer a daily shower, no matter where we are, this article offers some simple, step-by-step instructions for constructing a portable camping shower.

Instructions

Construct the frame. Lay four of the 36-inch 2-by-4s on a flat surface. Standing the sections on the 2" edge, arrange the boards in the basic shape of a square. Secure the frame by using the electric drill with the Phillips head bit to screw in eight of the 3-inch wood screws, two at each corner. The result should be a frame that measures 40 inches long, by 36 inches wide, by 4 inches tall.

    • 2

Install the floor boards. Turn the frame so that one of the 40-inch sides is closest to you, with the 36-inch sides to your left and right. Lay out the remaining two-by-four sections on the frame, with one end on the edge closest to you and the other end at the opposite side. Beginning with the first board flush to the left side of the frame, arrange the remaining boards on the frame with a 1-inch gap between each board. Using the electric drill with the Phillips head bit, attach each end of the 2-by-4 sections with a 3-inch wood screw. This will complete the floor of your camping shower.

    • 3

Cut a hole for the PVC pipe. Using the electric drill with the 2-inch hole drill, cut a hole through one of the 2-by-4 floor boards, in the middle of the 36-inch side, to your left. This will provide a place to install a PVC pipe to support your shower head.

Prepare the PVC shower head holder. Cut the 6-foot section of 2-inch PVC into two 3-foot sections. Apply PVC glue to the inside of the 2-inch sleeve, covering only half of the Sleeve. Slide the sleeve onto the end of one 3-foot PVC section and allow it to dry. Apply PVC glue to the bottom section of the 2-inch "T" connector and slide it onto one end of the other 3-foot PVC section and allow it to dry.

    • 5

Install the PVC shower head holder. Slide the PVC section that is attached to the sleeve into the hole that you cut into the floor board, with the sleeve side on top. Place the PVC section that is attached to the "T" connector into the Sleeve, with the "T" connector at the top. This will result in a shower head holder approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall.

    • 6

Attach the shower head. Thread the male end of the garden hose through the "T" connector and attach the garden hose sprayer. Compress the sprayer level to "On" and slide it back into the "T" connector. This will hold the sprayer in the "On" position. The PVC pipe section can be turned so that the sprayer is directly above the shower floor. Connect the other end of the hose to a water spigot and turn on the water to activate your camping shower.
