Buying firewood for camping isn't as easy as it once was. Harmful insects like the Emerald Ash Borer have caused restrictions of the movement of firewood. Rules now govern the movement or the amount of firewood sold between states and within regions of those states. Consider your source carefully to avoid hefty fines.
Buy and burn local wood. This is the number one rule of firewood. Do whatever you can to buy or find your firewood in the same area where you are going to burn it. Go without if you can't find local wood. Depending on your area, there are stiff penalties for transporting wood.
Call the park or campground where you are staying and ask if they sell wood. More places are providing firewood because of state restrictions.
Ask where the wood was cut. You may be buying wood from only a few miles away. It the wood has come from several hours away, don't buy it.
Find out your state's regulations regarding kiln-dried firewood, if you can't find a local provider. The process of kiln-drying kills insects. This type of wood is usually sold at large box stores or gas stations and clearly says kiln-dried fire wood on the label. Check laws because some areas still don't allow transport.
Burn all of your wood. You are not supposed to leave any wood behind and you absolutely can't take it home with you. If you don't burn it all, give it to other campers who can burn it right away.
