Why did later inhabitants of this region call it the Central Plain?

The region referred to as Mesopotamia is not called the Central Plain. Mesopotamia was the name given to the region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in ancient times. The name Mesopotamia comes from the Greek and means "between the rivers." The region is sometimes called the Fertile Crescent because of its rich soil and abundant water resources.
