What are the boundaries of Harlem?

Harlem's boundaries have shifted slightly over time, but generally it comprises most of the northern section of the New York City borough of Manhattan. Here are the modern-day boundaries of Harlem:

* North: The Hudson River

* South: Central Park (on the border between Central Harlem and the Upper West Side of Manhattan)

* East: The Harlem River/FDR Drive along much of the stretch, with exceptions where East Harlem extends east (to Fifth and Park Avenues south of 125th Street, and to First Avenue north of 125th Street)

* West: Frederick Douglass Boulevard, St. Nicholas Avenue, Cathedral Parkway (as the diagonal boundary with Morningside Heights; all on the border from east to west between West Harlem and the Upper West Side), and Riverside Drive
