San Cristobal Tourism

San Cristóbal's many attractions invited waves of tourists for decades. Perched in the highlands of Chiapas, the old colonial town is surrounded by a mountainous countryside of forests, farms and Tzotzil villages. Exploring the town's charming cobbled streets alone is worth a visit.

    • Popular activities include walking to Cerro de Guadalupe or Cerro de San Cristóbal for views of the city, perusing the exhibits of Centro Cltural de los Altos, Centro Cultural El Carmen and Café Museo Café, and visiting San Cristóbal's photogenic cathedral.

    Getting There

    • The town's nearest airport offering passenger flights is in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, almost two hours away. Otherwise, the Pan-American Highway links the the bulk of Mexico and the US to the north as well as Guatemala to the south by car, bus, colectivo and van.

    Getting Around

    • Aside from combis connecting the Pan-American Highway to the center of town and local taxis, San Cristóbal offers low-priced bike and scooter rentals (see Resources).

    Weather & When to Go

    • San Cristóbal has a temperate climate with warm summers and cool winters. Its tourist high season is roughly from June until August.

    • ATMs and money changing services can be found at San Cristóbal's Banamex and HSBC banks.
