Earth's Heavily Forested Regions: The Green Belts

Forests cover ~31% of Earth's land (4.06B ha), but they're not evenly distributed. Five continental-scale forest belts dominate:

1. North America: The Boreal-Temperate Continuum

• Pacific Northwest: Coastal temperate rainforests (redwood, Douglas fir, Sitka spruce) — highest biomass/ha globally.
• Rocky Mountains: Subalpine conifers (lodgepole, spruce-fir, whitebark pine) — fire-adapted mosaics.
• Great Lakes / Northeast: Mixed hardwood-conifer (maple-beech-birch, pine-oak) — second-growth dominant.
• Southeast: Pine plantations, bottomland hardwoods, longleaf pine remnants.
• Boreal Canada/Alaska: 270M ha spruce-fir-tamarack — largest intact forest biome.

2. South America: Tropical Dominance

• Amazon Basin: 5.5M km² — 60% of global tropical rainforest. Unparalleled diversity.
• Andean Cloud Forests: Elevational gradients, endemism hotspots.
• Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica): 12% remaining — extreme fragmentation, high endemism.
• Gran Chaco / Cerrado: Dry forests/savannas — rapid conversion to soy/cattle.

3. Africa: The Congo Heart

• Congo Basin: 2M km² — 2nd largest tropical forest. Peatlands (30Gt C). Forest elephants, gorillas, okapi.
• Guinean Forests (West Africa): Fragmented biodiversity hotspot (Upper/Lower Guinea).
• Eastern Arc / Ethiopian Highlands: Afromontane islands, paleo-endemics.
• Miombo Woodlands: Southern Africa dry deciduous (Brachystegia) — vast, human-used.

4. Europe: Fragmented but Recovering

• Fennoscandia / Russian Taiga: Largest European forest block (pine, spruce, birch) — intensive forestry.
• Carpathians: Primeval beech-fir (UNESCO), large carnivores.
• Alps / Pyrenees / Dinarides: Montane conifer/beech, reforesting abandoned pasture.
• Western/Central Europe: Plantation-dominated, <30% cover, increasing.

5. Asia: The Taiga Giant + Tropical Archipelagos

• Siberian Taiga: 800M+ ha — world's largest forest. Larch, pine, spruce. Permafrost underlay.
• Chinese Forests: NE natural, S subtropical, massive afforestation (Three-North Shelterbelt, Grain-for-Green).
• Southeast Asian Rainforests: Sundaland (Borneo, Sumatra), Wallacea, Indo-Burma — highest deforestation rates (palm oil, pulp, logging).
• Himalayan Broadleaf/Conifer: Elevational zonation, water towers.

Key Metrics

Intact Forest Landscapes (IFL): 11.8M km² (2020) — declining 7.2% since 2000. Primary forest: 1.11B ha (27%). Net loss: 4.7M ha/yr (2010-2020).

These regions aren't just "forested"—they're the planet's carbon vaults, species arks, climate regulators, and human lifelines.
