What weathering agents caused formations such as the grand canyon?

The Grand Canyon is primarily the result of water erosion (pluvial erosion), caused by the Colorado River over approximately 17 million years. The region was uplifted approximately 5 to 6 million years ago causing increased river speeds that eroded the canyon down through multiple layers of colored rocks.
