The Arunta Desert Doesn't Exist—But Central Arunta Region Does
There is no "Arunta Desert" in Australia. The name likely confuses:
- Arunta (Arrernte) Block / Orogen: Paleoproterozoic geological province (1.8–1.6 Ga) in southern Northern Territory — high-grade metamorphic rocks, gold deposits (The Granites, Tanami).
- Central Arunta Region: Administrative/biogeographic area covering ~150,000 km² of the southern NT — includes desert landscapes (simpson, tanami margins) but not a named desert.
- Arrernte (Aranda) People: Traditional owners of Alice Springs (Mparntwe) and surrounding Central Australian ranges.
Actual Deserts in That Vicinity
| Desert | Location | Area | Type |
| Simpson Desert | NT/SA/QLD border | 176,500 km² | Sand dune (erg) |
| Tanami Desert | NT/WA | 184,500 km² | Rocky / sandplain |
| Great Sandy Desert | WA | 284,993 km² | Sand dune / spinifex |
| Gibson Desert | WA | 156,000 km² | Gravel / laterite |
Why the Confusion?
"Arunta" appears in mining (Arunta Region tenements), geology (Arunta Orogen), and Indigenous contexts (Arrernte language group). Tourist brochures sometimes misuse it as a desert name.
If you're looking for desert in Central Australia: **Simpson** (dunes, 4WD), **Tanami** (gold, remote), or **Uluru-Kata Tjuta** (iconic inselbergs, not a desert per se but arid). No "Arunta Desert" on any gazetteer.
