Abkhazia: Geographic Location – Europe/Asia Border on Black Sea
Abkhazia lies on the eastern Black Sea coast, at the Caucasus Mountains' western end—the traditional Europe-Asia boundary.
Geopolitical Status
- De facto: Russian-backed separatist state (since 1992–93 war with Georgia). Recognized by Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, Syria.
- De jure: Part of Georgia (UN, EU, US, NATO, almost all states).
- Population: ~240K (pre-war ~525K; ethnic cleansing of Georgians).
Continental Classification
- Physical geography: Caucasus watershed divide → mostly in Europe (north of watershed), small part in Asia.
- Political/cultural: Historically linked to Georgia (Europe/Caucasus). Russian alignment pulls toward Europe/Asia ambiguity.
- Common convention: Transcaucasia / South Caucasus region—often grouped with Europe for political/sporting bodies (UEFA, Eurovision via Russia).
No universal consensus. "Mostly European territory" is a defensible geographic shorthand.
