What are the objectives of Warsaw Pact and who members?

The Warsaw Pact was a collective defense treaty signed in Warsaw, Poland, on May 14, 1955. The treaty was established by the Soviet Union and seven satellite states (Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Romania). The main objectives of the Warsaw Pact were:

1. To counter the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and prevent the expansion of the Western alliance in Europe.

2. To ensure the continued control of the Soviet Union over Eastern Europe and to maintain the status quo in the region.

3. To provide mutual assistance to member states in the event of an attack or threat of attack from outside the Warsaw Pact.

4. To promote cooperation among the member states in the areas of defense, economy, and culture.

The Warsaw Pact remained in force until it was dissolved in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.
