Asia & Pacific: Mandate System

  • German colonies → League of Nations mandates:
    • Japan: Mariana, Caroline, Marshall Islands (North Pacific).
    • Australia: German New Guinea, Nauru.
    • New Zealand: Western Samoa.
    • UK: Tanganyika, part of Togoland/Cameroon.
  • Ottoman Arab lands → Class A mandates:
    • France: Syria, Lebanon.
    • UK: Iraq, Palestine (incl. Transjordan).
  • Russian losses (Brest-Litovsk 1918, reversed): Finland, Baltics, Poland, Ukraine, Caucasus independent briefly; most reabsorbed by USSR by 1922.

Long-Term Consequences

  • Ethnic minorities stranded in new states (Germans in Czechoslovakia/Poland, Hungarians in Romania, etc.).
  • Irredentism → WWII (Sudetenland, Danzig, South Tyrol).
  • Mandate borders → modern Middle East conflicts (Sykes-Picot legacy).
  • League of Nations created – collective security failed.
