Camps in North Carolina for Troubled Teens

The state of North Carolina is known for its sprawling mountains and scenic views. For these reasons, it is a popular camping and retreat destination. There are a number of camps in the state that cater to youth with a variety of emotional, physical and developmental problems. The camps have varying rates and availability, so be sure to call far in advance.
  1. Camp Cheerio

    • Camp Cheerio is a YMCA-run youth camp, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, with several different programs offered throughout each summer.

      One of the programs offered by the camp is an extended stay-over camp for young teenagers with behavioral and mental difficulties. The camp is open for boys and girls ages 7 to 16 and builds community and strong peer relationships through field games, creative arts and nature study programs.

      Each camper experiences a two-week stay filled with activities and peers all day long. In addition to structured actives, the camp has many water-recreational opportunities, including canoeing and kayaking, swimming and fishing.

    Camp Mondamin

    • Established in 1922, Camp Modamin is an small summer camp for boys ages 6 to 17 that emphasizes building bonds between youths through wilderness activities such as horseback riding, kayaking, rock climbing and other outdoor games.

      There are also several hiking and biking trails, as well as basketball, softball, and tennis courts. The camp focuses on teaching community living skills and building self esteem not only through sports and recreation, but with group talks, team building sessions and community outreach.

    SUWS of the Carolinas

    • Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina, SUWS of the Carolinas is a extended therapeutic wilderness program that specializes in working with youths ages 11 to 18 who are struggling with a variety of mental and physical problems and addictions.

      SUWS caters to teens dealing with depression, drug or alcohol abuse, family conflict and many other difficulties. In additional to counselors and peer tutors, there is a large clinical team on hand to work with kids at and their needs at any hour.

      The program focuses on building strong peer and adult relationships, as well as identifying and overcoming personal challenges though ropes courses, backpacking and camping and a number of other recreational activities.
