How European Religions Spread Globally: Colonialism, Trade, Missions & Culture
European religions (primarily Christianity) spread worldwide through four main mechanisms:
- Colonialism: Imperial powers imposed or encouraged conversion in colonies (Americas, Africa, Asia, Oceania), sometimes forcibly, sometimes through institutional dominance.
- Trade: Merchants carried religious texts, icons, and ideas along trade routes; sometimes exchanged as gifts or commodities.
- Missionary Work: Organized missions (Catholic orders, Protestant societies) built schools, hospitals, and churches while proselytizing.
- Cultural Exchange: Contact between European and non-European societies led to voluntary adoption, syncretism, or adaptation of beliefs.
This diffusion made Christianity, Islam, and Judaism the world's largest religions and influenced others like Buddhism and Hinduism.
