History:
The Danish krone has been the currency of Denmark since 1875, when it replaced the Danish rigsdaler. The krone was originally pegged to the gold standard, but this peg was abandoned in 1914 due to the outbreak of World War I.
During the 1930s, the krone was devalued several times in response to the Great Depression. In 1940, Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany and the krone was pegged to the German reichsmark.
After the war, the Danish krone was devalued again in 1949 and pegged to the US dollar. This peg lasted until 1973 when the krone was allowed to float freely against other currencies.
In 1992, Denmark joined the European Economic Community (EEC), now known as the European Union (EU), but chose to opt out of the euro currency. As a result, the krone has remained an independent currency.
