Start your day at the UNESCO World Heritage List site, Piazza Grande. You'll find both the Duomo and Palazzo Comunale on Piazza Grande. The Duomo, started in 1099 and completed in the 13th century, is considered one of the best surviving examples of European Romanesque architecture. Its exterior façade is the work of Wiligelmo and the Maestri Campionesi and are some of the earliest Romanesque sculptures in Italy; additional pieces by Maestri Campionesi are found in the interior along with 15th century terra cotta pieces by Guido Mazzoni. A short distance from the Duomo in Piazza del Torre you'll find the 14th century 87m (286 feet) Torre della Ghirlandina. The Palazzo Comunale has three public areas that are well worth a visit: the 16th-century Sala del Fuoco, 17th-century Sala del Vecchio Consiglio and the 18th-century Sala degli Arazzi. Move on to the church of San Giovanni Battista, an 18th-entury church known for its 15th-century terracotta figures done by Guido Mazzoni. The church of Sant'Agostino is just steps away. Originally built in the third century then radically modified in the 17th century, Sant'Agostino has a beautiful fresco 17th-century fresco entitled, "Mary with the baby Jesus" done by Tommaso da Modena along with a group of terracotta figures by Begarelli. The Palazzo dei Musei, which is attached to Sant'Agostino, houses the Borso d'Este Bible, one of the most beautifully illustrated surviving 15th-century bibles along with sculpture by Bernini, Velasquez, Correggio and El Greco. Your last stop is the Galleria Estense to see the famous collection of 15th-century works done by Correggio, Dosso Dossi, Titian, Tintoretto, Guercino, Veronese, Velaàzques, Giovanni di Paolo, Bassano, Domenichino, Strozzi, Rosa, Guardi and other artists.
